Mrs. Natalia M. RZHANITSYNA, ONHP International Relations Department Head: “To speak or not to speak”: that is NOT a question for International company

PAO ONHP [ONHP] is an engineering company well known among professional associations all over the world.

Our originally Russian (founded in 1953 in Omsk) and by definition international company stands out for its signature style recognized by unique engineering solutions developed within projects implementation.

For seven decades ONHP chronicle has been enriched with bright and significant events. The company is comparable with perennial spring of innovative ideas – technologies and methodologies developed here usually tend to be unique without any equals or alternatives.

Unicity of approaches reflects in all areas including qualification improvement system which is being constantly updated. Special attention is paid to the development of professional competences enabling engineers to issue bilingual documentation.

High performance indicators related to bilingual documentation issue are guaranteed by ONHP Language Policy (approved in 2016) specifying the requirements to the personnel regarding business communication in English and Language Policy implementation Program. Three-level system to improve English proficiency is one of the tools used in the Program. Thanks to this system ONHP personnel has an opportunity to continuously develop skills.

ONHP-wide English Speaking Day is an annual event held as an integral part of Language Policy implementation Program. Within this event annual overall results are summarized and tasks for the nearest future are set. The main permanent goal is continuous increase of ONHP employees’ competences level related to high quality documentation issue in two and more languages. The first English Speaking Day was held in January 2011. This year not only ONHP HQ personnel took part in the event, ONHP-Balkans engineers from the Republic of Serbia and ONHP Research Engineering Center employees from Saint-Petersburg joined HQ colleagues via videoconference.  

Traditionally within company-wide English Speaking Day the results of ONHP Technical Text Translation Contest confined to International Translation Day were announced. In 2016 more than 60 people took part in the Contest including ONHP and other companies employees, Omsk universities students and students of ONHP patronized schools. Contest winners were awarded Certificates of Honor and Certificates of Appreciation.  

Record number of participants from Omsk schools was captured in 2016. Mr. Yan S. TROITSKIY, 10 grade student, Omsk school No. 56 became the winner in nomination “Excellent English to Russian Translator among ONHP Patronized School Students”. His English language teacher was solemnly awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for English language teaching excellence and reverential attitude to the work executed.

Student from leading Omsk universities such as Omsk State University named after F.M. Dostoevsky, Omsk State Technical University and Siberian Automobile and Highway Academy also took an active part in 2016 Contest. Ms. Julia S. GNOEVYKH, third-year student, Chemical Faculty, Omsk State University named after F.M. Dostoevsky and Ms. Maria A. BYKOVA, third-year student, Foreign Languages Faculty, Omsk State University named after F.M. Dostoevsky became the best among students. Certificates of Appreciation for longstanding effective cooperation and high quality of students professional development will be handled to Mrs. Natalia G. GICHEVA, Foreign Languages Faculty Dean, Omsk State University named after F.M. Dostoevsky and to Mrs. Irina V. VLASOVA, Chemistry Faculty Dean, Omsk State University named after F.M. Dostoevsky.  

Mr. Vadim R. VAGAPOV, Gazpromneft-Omsk Refinery Operator, became the winner in nomination “Excellent English to Russian Translator among Third Party Companies Employees”.

Mr. Aleksander A. KUZNETSOV, Cat. 2 Engineer, ONHP Electrical Engineering Department, became the winner in nomination “Excellent English to Russian Translator among ONHP Employees”.  

Certificates of Honor were awarded to ONHP departments which became the best following the results of Language Policy implementation in 2016:

-       ONHP Process Engineering Department was awarded for high personal performance indicators among engineers with high English proficiency, for the biggest quantity of employees who successfully completed English proficiency improvement courses, for persistence and diligence during English proficiency improvement courses, for high responsibility of English Speaking Day supervisors and co-supervisors and for high quality of bilingual documentation issued in 2016.

-       Civil Engineering Department No.1 and Electrical Engineering Department were awarded for high personal performance indicators among engineers with high English proficiency and for high responsibility of English Speaking Day supervisors and co-supervisors.

-       Civil Engineering Department No.2 was awarded for high quality of bilingual documentation issued in 2016.

 ONHP-Balkans, Serbian ONHP Branch office was mentioned in a special way within ONHP-wide English Speaking Day. All engineers of this branch office are highly proficient in English and issue documentation in Russian, English and Serbian languages. ONHP-Balkans was awarded the Certificate of Honor for high level of competences.

Representative Contest results, summary of Language Policy implementation in 2016 and language environment established in the company allow us speaking confidently that ONHP is a company with no translators or third-party companies responsible for documentation issued in English; it is ONHP engineers with equal competences in Russian and English who are responsible for documentation issue in the English language ensuring ONHP high quality guarantor and competitive advantage.
