Range of languages for international communication in russian design institute is expanding

鸟欲高飞先振翅,人求上进先读书

In order to make progress, you have to learn

just as a bird flips its wings to fly higher.

 Chinese proverb

OMSKNEFTEKHIMPROEKT JSC (ONHP, Russian Design Institute) top management stated a company-wide objective to increase a number of languages for international communication.  Engineers get to know Chinese and improve their English skills, in other words they explore the intricacies of the languages in their spare time.

ONHP General Director, who headed the company from 2001 to 2012, presently the member of the Council of the Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation (*Russia’s Supreme Legislative body, Russia’s Parliament Upper House, similar to “Senate” in the USA), Igor ZUGA gave an impetus to ONHP specialists to boost their language competences. Nowadays, this Russian Design Institute employs specialists fluent in English, German, Japanese and some other foreign languages. The number of people willing to acquire such competences within the company increases steadily.

In September 2013 ONHP English language courses started all over again. The groups were arranged taking into account an individual English level of each participant. The specialists had to pass a comprehensive test and based on the results they were divided in accordance with Common European Framework of Reference, CEFR. The groups include not only ONHP young professionals but also experienced specialists, as far as the pursuit of personal development and professional self-improvement is the company’s main focus and specialists’ priority regardless their age or work experience.

Together with highly qualified professors (Cand. Sc. in Philology and Cand. Sc. in Education) (*similar to PhD) the ONHP interpreters & translators participate in coaching of advanced ESP students.

Those of ONHP engineers who are competent in foreign language and proficient in engineering are actively engaged in Pilot Projects aimed at English language improvement within ESP (English for Specific Purposes) course.

Such approach enables to create real-life business communication environment as well as to study terms and wordings selected by coaches from up-to date bilingual sources and applied by engineers during their design activities.

This year the company’s top management made a far-sighted strategic decision to expand the range of languages for international communication within the company. As a result, not only Russian-English but also Russian-English-Chinese interpreters & translators are employed in ONHP Group of Translation & Interpreting. Moreover, some specialists of this department who are proficient in English began to study the Chinese language. As far as, if not ONHP Group of Translation & Interpreting, who shall set the pace in increasing language competences within the company! Even the new-comers of this polylingual department are aimed at continuous development, oriented on self-improvement and eager to reach for the stars with smart goals and hit the moon.

The specialists of other ONHP departments are trying to keep pace with the Group of Translation and Interpreting as well as to be in step with the time. This year the Chinese language courses once again open the doors for those longing for knowledge.

For all ONHP specialists only sky is the limit. Therefore, engineers and specialists of the company set themselves the most ambitious professional goals and work hard to reach them step by step. At the same time, each ONHP engineer acknowledges that all the efforts are made for the benefit of the company they work for.
