Bilingual design in ONHP

PAO OMSKNEFTEKHIMPROEKT (ONHP) is completing the first year of language policy implementation. The policy objective is that 70% of the company's employees must be proficient in the language of international communication at minimum Intermediate level by 2018. This requirement is primarily resulted from professional contacts of ONHP as an international engineering company. Cooperation with a number of foreign companies requires ONHP specialists to be able to perform bilingual designing works and to speak fluent English during negotiations.

Following the test results as on January of 2015 the number of all employees speaking at least Intermediate English made 50%.

The company has been holding English Language courses for many years. The analysis showed that successful studying of the foreign language by ONHP specialists required training program covering all areas of the company activity as well as considering different levels of proficiency. As a result, language policy has been developed.

The Policy suggests improving oral and written communication skills. A number of measures have been prepared for this purpose. Each incoming employee is obliged to pass a test identifying the level of proficiency. Based on the test results as well as focusing on the professional competence, the training program is formed for each specialist. Among training programs there are courses of English for Special Purposes designed for different levels of competence, various intensive modules such as "Offshore platforms", "Negotiations", "Business trips", "Business Correspondence" etc. Applied teaching methods enable to cover a bigger number of employees aiming at elimination of the “gaps” in the language competence.

Each training course has final exams. Ideally, ONHP specialists should be fluent in technical language, understand terminology and technical documentation, negotiate and maintain business correspondence.
